Nervosa - Debut Album & News/Updates Local News / Music Date: May 27, 2007 - 12:16 PM Nervosa are currently in the studio recording their debut album Paranoid Soul... January 06 saw the conception of Nervosa following front man Jon Winter and mandolinist Beccy Melling having a spontaneous jam with wine glasses and a relaxation tape which with the addition of guitar, mandolin, bass and programmed drums evolved into a demo version of Breathe In. A handful of songs were written over the next few months, Put an End to This, Black Box and Ambient Craziness. As the collection grew, they started to think about getting a full band together with a view to gigging and recording. The challenge was to find a drummer up for mixing hip hop with folk rock beats, and the obvious choice was Laura Shepherd (former drummer for Baby Astrolab) who jumped at the chance. Bryn Powell (front man for local band Blindfold Garden) was enlisted on bass guitar and backing vocals, and the foursome had their first practice in September 2006. Feeling that their sound was still in need of something extra, they called in Andy Cunningham (formerly of Baby Astrolab) to provide a beefier guitar sound, and utilise his talent on the decks to incorporate some of the electronic music the band had created. Drawing on influences ranging from Pink Floyd to Massive Attack to REM, they decided to name their genre Shifty Folk. During this period, Nervosa were contacted by some Falmouth University students who needed a local band to record and shoot a video for. Despite their recent formation, Nervosa jumped at the chance, and decided to record Black Box. The band had definite ideas about the type of video they wanted and how they wished the lyrics to be interpreted visually. In November, Nervosa travelled to Falmouth to record the sound for the video (see photos here) and had a thoroughly enjoyable day. The video below is the result, although the band like to think of it more as a work in progress, as they aren’t entirely satisfied with the mix, and video editor Ryan Newbury is keen to re-shoot some shots, so Nervosa are hoping to remix and reedit it sometime soon. A burst of creativity resulted in 42 Pigeons, and some computer experimentation produced rough versions of Crazy Bass, and Funky Moped. Laura’s new drum kit provided another musical adrenaline rush shortly afterwards, producing Over, Gripped and a tribute to their favourite and now sadly defunct local band The Chinaski Effect. The pre-Christmas period saw Nervosa toying with song dynamics and increasingly impressive drum fills and backing vocals. In 2007, Alex Perry joined the band on keys/synth to create a more expansive Nervosa sound. Local upcoming filmmaker, the talented Rhys Bonney, approached the band in April 2007 for permission to use “Breathe In” as the soundtrack to a short film he is going to be showing at some major film festivals later in the year.
