Events Jazz maestro Courtney Pine is to bring the exotic sounds and essences of Europe to the Princess Pavilion on Friday 18th March...

One of Britain’s most celebrated and influential jazz artists renowned for his mastery on the saxophone, Courtney Pine has recently pulled something different from his bountiful musical sleeves. Early March will see his new album, Europa, launched at Ronnie Scott’s; an eclectic album that reflects on Pine’s two decades of touring European countries.

What’s so distinctive about this album is Pine’s decision to abandon his trusty saxophone and use the bass clarinet. An instrument he describes as sounding earthier and ideally suited - with the support of an accompaniment of European instruments - for capturing the sound, flavours and essence of places like Turkey, Scandinavia and Spain.

After twenty years of success at the top of the British jazz scene and with countless awards including an OBE for his services to music, it seems Pine has reached the point in his career, like so many musicians, where the liberating music, hidden deep within, wants to break free and have its time. By choosing an adventurous, highly reflective path with the new album, he is stepping out of his comfort zone, but remains confident Europa will leave a lasting legacy. Come listen to Courtney Pine play Europa at the Pavilion and make up your own mind.

Doors open at 8pm. Show starts 8.30pm. Advance Tickets £17.50 - available from the Pavilion box office 01326 211222, online www.princesspavilion.co.uk and via Hall for Cornwall and See Tickets. Join the Pavilion Facebook account for regular updates on acts.
