Arriving in Penryn shortly after his spell supporting Bill Callahan (Smog) in Europe, Sir Richard Bishop is a must-see for fans of the solo guitar players Lono have been bringing to Cornwall (Jack Rose R.I.P, Six Organs, James Blackshaw, John Fairhurst)...
Acoustic Guitar Magazine called Sir Richard’s music a ”genre-bending amalgam of Gypsy jazz and Middle Eastern modes” whereas lauded American guitar player John Fahey (who signed him to his label) once told him that he played “like the Devil”. His recent, critically acclaimed album The Freak of Araby draws upon the music of North Africa & the Middle East, this performance will focus on such sounds.
“He played around the world with the Sun City Girls for 26 years, and has released six solo albums in the last decade… Fragments is a spectacular showcase of Bishop’s multi-dimensional talents. Here we get fast-picked folk, Django Reinhardt-worthy gypsy tunes, Chet Atkins-style ditties, Hindi-influenced melodies, and a lode of other, less classifiable stuff. Fragments is remarkably kaleidoscopic… Bishop has always been a stunning player, picking through blinding runs in a flash. But here his ability to think fast and play even faster is employed solely in service of songcraft”
