Events Cornwall Leisure Centres - Tsunami Gymathon, 29th January 2005 - Representatives of six Cornish council districts are supporting a joint initiative to encourage the users of the public leisure centres across Cornwall to actively participate in a Tsunami fund raising initiative to raise in excess of £7,500...

In all, thirteen Leisure Centres are taking part in a county-wide, day-long Gymathon on Saturday 29th January 2005:

  • Truro Leisure Centre
  • Carn Brea Leisure Centre
  • Ships & Castles Leisure Centre
  • Newquay Sports Centre
  • Lux Park Leisure Centre
  • Newquay Waterworld
  • Saltash Leisure Centre
  • Polkyth Leisure Centre
  • Looe Sports Centre
  • St Ives Leisure Centre
  • The Dragon Centre, Bodmin
  • Helston Sports Centre
  • Phoenix Centre, Launceston

Each centre will provide two jogging machines, two cycles and two rowing machines (6 pieces of equipment) that will be available for 15 minute slots throughout the day from 7am to 7pm. This represents a total of 288 slots per centre and a total of 3,744 slots available throughout the 13 centres.

Members of the public are invited to book a slot to spend 15 minutes exercising on a piece of equipment of their choice, and anyone over 8 years of age and in good health is eligible to take part. As the machines are capable of measuring distance, each centre will calculate the number of miles/kilometres travelled throughout the day and there will be some healthy competition between the centres to be the Gymathon County Champions.

All participants are asked to donate £2 per 15 minute slot, but are welcome to contribute more than the minimum amount if they wish, and to gain additional sponsorship from friends and family. As this is a Cornwall-based initiative, funds raised will be donated to a local charity, ShelterBox, based in Helston.

Members of the public are invited to contact their local centre for further details and to book their time slot. The entire project is being co-ordinated by Carrick Leisure Limited, Falmouth. Contact Martin Symons: 01326 310980.
