Last Wednesday night, after a meeting, I was on my way to Truro bus station when I heard some
familiar tones nearby.
This provoked an instant decision to catch a later bus and I went to investigate.
It transpired that this was the first gig of a regular Wednesday slot for the house band from the S&G with Monty Ray up front.
Little more needs to be said except that Max handed over the keys for a while to a talented youngster from Southport, Matt Belcher, a member of Lancashire? Youth Jazz Orchestra. He had a nice Hammondy tone which was a little redolent of our own Richard Penrose.
So, another venue opens and, if the reception was anything to go by, it will build. For instance a bunch of youths arrived during the break and asked what the music was. Told it was jazz they said, "We'll just have a quickie then!", but they remained 'til closing and applauded as loudly as the rest.
