Tues 26 September £13/£8/£5 Will Butterworth Quartet

Will Butterworth (pno), Seb Pipe (alt), Nick Pini (bs), Marco Quarantotto (dr)

The Will Butterworth quartet tours the UK to promote the release of a new album 'The Nightingale and the Rose', out on Jellymould Jazz. Based on Oscar Wilde’s famous children’s story, this music started life as a solo piano composition for a story book, and has since grown into a full, vibrant and dynamic quartet suite. This suite has six sections that segue into one another, retelling Wilde’s story of love and sacrifice, and following the plight of the Nightingale until her final song is performed. The quartet uses these melodies as starting points for improvisation, so that no two performances are the same. Will Butterworth, grew up playing classical cello, and improvising on the piano. He studied piano in Edinburgh with Dominic Spencer, and in London with Steve Lodder, and has since played and recorded with many of Britain’s finest musicians. He has released four albums as leader, and is one half of the Dylan Howe-Will Butterworth duo that re-interpreted the works of Stravinsky. Seb Pipe is a composer and bandleader in his own right. His own band ‘Seb Pipe’s life experience’ has released three critically acclaimed albums. He is also an in demand sideman, currently working with Max Luthert. Seb worked with Portuguese group Pequenos Mundos in 2004 and again in 2006. From 2001 to 2011 Seb spent influential periods with American pioneer Steve Coleman and his Five Elements band at workshops in France and masterclasses in London. Nick Pini plays in a huge variety of groups and styles. In the jazz world he has worked with just about everyone at one time or another - one notable collaboration is with Jac Jones and Will Butterworth in the band ‘A-priori’. Outside the jazz world he tours extensively with Laura Marlin, and has worked with many a famous name including Tom Jones and Van Morrison. Croatian drummer Marco Quarantotto moved to London in 2009 and has performed with many of Britain's finest musicians Nathaniel Facey, Mike Gorman, Andrew Noble, Nicholas Meyer, Nigel Price, Other notable international artists he's worked with include Jessica Lourie, Erin Dickins of Manhattan Transfer, Roy Paci, Knoel Scott of Sun Ra Arkestra, Manu Eveno of Trŷo.
